Florida Agricultural Commissioner, Nikki Fried, announced last week that she would create a new position under the state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services department aimed at overseeing the state’s medical cannabis program and encourage hemp production in the state. Dubbed the “Director of Cannabis,” the new position will play a major role in the rule-making process for Florida’s burgeoning hemp industry.

“Certainly we have seen tremendous support from our citrus industry as well as our local and smaller farmers who are looking into getting into the hemp business and really having an alternate crop,” Fried told NBC News.
