This week, Florida Senate Agriculture Chairman Ben Albritton submitted SB 1058, a bill that would create an industrial hemp program in the state of Florida. The bill comes in the wake of Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried’s appointment of Holly Bell as the state’s first Director of Cannabis; a position that will play an integral role in shaping Florida’s hemp industry. Under Albritton’s bill, businesses and farmers wishing to grow hemp would be required to register with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The bill also sets down requirements regarding where hemp is grown and processed.
