The hemp and CBD industry have gained another unlikely ally. On October 30, 2018, United States House Majority Leader Paul Ryan (R-WI) announced his support for hemp and CBD. Speaking at a campaign rally in Kentucky, the Ryan stated that CBD “has proven to work” and that the substance can help reduce seizures. Pivoting to hemp, Ryan then said that he learned of hemp’s many uses after speaking with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and that he was in favor of that as well. Although Ryan did not explicitly endorse the language in the 2018 Farm Bill which would fully legalize hemp in the United States, his words do give hemp advocates hope that this signals support for the provision in the House of Representatives.
