It is a little more than two months into the new year, and already Illinois’ 2019 hemp harvest looks like it might be a bust. Earlier this week, the Illinois Department of Agriculture held a public hearing regarding its rules for the state’s industrial hemp program. The department was met by a slew of farmers voicing their concerns over the proposed rules. According to NPR, many objected to a rule that would require farmers to submit a growing application 90 days before planting their crop, which farmers claim would prevent them from planting their hemp crops in time.
