Industrial hemp is coming to Illinois. On August 25, 2018, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law the Industrial Hemp Act. The measure had broad bipartisan support, passing in the state of House of Representatives by a margin of 106-3 and passing unanimously in the state Senate. Under the new law, individuals wishing to grow hemp for commercial purposes may seek licensure with the state Department of Agriculture. The measure also amends the Noxious Weed Act and the Cannabis Control Act by removing hemp from both legal categories. Although the act goes into effect immediately, state regulators will still need to devise rules for testing THC levels in hemp crops.
