New Zealanders will now be able to purchase food produced derived from hemp seed. On November 12, 2018, changes to the Misuse of Drugs (Industrial Hemp) Regulations 2006 and the Food Regulations 2015, which would allow hemp seeds to be used in food products, went into effect. The laws were changed earlier this year after when trans-Tasman Ministers approved a change to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. In order to assist the hemp seed industry, New Zealand Food Safety has released two new guides, A guide to hemp seeds as food and A guide to labelling food containing hemp seeds.
