2019 is already shaping up to be a banner year for Wisconsin hemp. On March 4, 2019, the Wisconsin state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced that it has received 2,100 applications to either grow or process industrial hemp. To contrast, only 247 grower licenses and 100 processor licenses were approved in 2018. In addition to the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, one of the factors that contributed to the influx of hemp farmers this year was an extension of the application deadline from December 31, 2018 to March 1, 2019.
